Dr. Fixit Bitufix is a high-quality, water-based emulsion of selected grades of bitumen. It is thixotropic, which means it is thick and gel-like in the container but flows easily when stirred or applied, preventing drips and sagging on vertical surfaces. When applied, the water in the emulsion evaporates, and the bitumen particles coalesce to form a durable, flexible, and impermeable black film.
Primary Applications:
Dr. Fixit Bitufix is primarily used for waterproofing and protecting below-ground and concealed structures that are not exposed to direct sunlight or weathering:
- Foundations and Footings: Provides a protective waterproof barrier for concrete foundations against ground moisture.
- Basements and Retaining Walls: Used on the external (positive) side of basement walls and retaining walls to prevent water ingress from the soil.
- Damp-Proof Course (DPC): Can be applied as a liquid DPC on plinth beams and masonry surfaces.
- Concealed Concrete Members: Waterproofing of concrete surfaces that will be covered, such as the underside of floor slabs or behind cladding.
- Protective Coating: Can be used as a general-purpose protective coating for buried or embedded concrete and steel.
Important Limitations:
- It is not suitable for areas exposed to direct sunlight (UV radiation), as this will cause the bitumen to become brittle and crack over time.
- It is not intended for use in areas with standing water or as a final finish for roofs or terraces.
Method of Application:
- Surface Preparation: The surface must be clean, sound, and free from all dust, dirt, oil, grease, and loose particles. Any sharp protrusions should be smoothed out.
- Priming: For highly porous or dusty surfaces, a priming coat is recommended. This is made by diluting Dr. Fixit Bitufix with an equal amount of clean water (1:1 ratio). Apply this primer and allow it to dry completely (becomes touch-dry and black).
- Application: Stir the contents of the container well before use. Apply the first coat of undiluted Dr. Fixit Bitufix to the primed surface using a brush, roller, or squeegee.
- Second Coat: Allow the first coat to dry completely (typically 4-6 hours, depending on conditions). Apply the second coat at a right angle to the first to ensure a seamless, pinhole-free membrane.
- Protection: The applied coating must be protected from mechanical damage. For applications like retaining walls, it is recommended to use a protection board before backfilling with soil.
In summary, Dr. Fixit Bitufix is a straightforward, reliable, and economical solution for waterproofing and protecting substructures and concealed concrete surfaces from moisture and dampness.
